Our story

Our Voice Cameroon (OVC) was founded in 2018 by a teacher at Holy Rosary Comprehensive College Bamendankwe, an inclusive secondary school where deaf and hearing students learn together.

While working at the school, she observed that deaf students, who were active and engaged on campus, often faced exclusion in community spaces outside the school environment. The primary barrier was communication, as sign language interpreters were rarely available, making it difficult for deaf individuals to fully participate in social, educational, and community activities.

Motivated to address this challenge, she established OVC as an association that brought together volunteer sign language interpreters to bridge the communication gap and promote inclusion beyond the classroom.

Since its founding, OVC has continued to evolve in response to the changing needs of the deaf community. What began as a volunteer-driven initiative has grown into an organization committed to advancing accessibility, inclusion, and equal opportunities for deaf people across Cameroon

Our mission

To promote an inclusive society where deaf persons can access information, services, and opportunities on an equal basis.

In line with Sustainable Development Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities), we work towards reducing inequalities experienced by deaf persons by improving access to information, advocating for language rights, and fostering meaningful participation in education, employment, and community development.

Our Vision

A barrier-free Cameroon where deaf persons are fully included, empowered, and valued as equal members of society.

Our areas of focus

Free sign language interpreting

We provide professional sign language interpreters to bridge communication gaps in various settings, ensuring Deaf individuals can access essential services and participate fully in society. From medical appointments to community gatherings, our interpreters facilitate clear and effective communication.

Menstrual health education

We conduct workshops and provide resources on menstrual health for Deaf girls, ensuring they have access to vital information and support. Our programmes empower them with knowledge, confidence, and dignity regarding their reproductive health.

Advocacy for legal recognition

Our Voice Cameroon actively campaigns for the legal recognition of Cameroonian Sign Language. We believe that official recognition will secure the rights and promote the cultural identity of the Deaf community, paving the way for greater inclusion and opportunities.
